SCI FI Channel looks to broaden its audience with Warehouse 13

Warehouse 13, an upcoming scifi/fantasy series from the SCI FI Channel, has been described as "part The X-Files, part Raiders of the Lost Ark and part Moonlighting."1 What's the deal with the over the top comparisons? I guess we're supposed to expect whip-wielding, wisecracking, lovesick conspiracy-theorists who monitor the country for supernatural and paranormal activity....

It's not that Warehouse 13 doesn't sound interesting. The description—"Warehouse 13: a massive, secret storage facility that houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government over the centuries"1—seems full of fantastic possibilities.

Mark Stern, executive Vice President of original programming at SCI FI Channel, made comments about Warehouse 13's similarity to Eureka, in that there'll be more focus on stand-alone episodes than with the current batch of SCI FI programming, where many of the stories are intricately connected in a highly serialized format like with Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Atlantis They hope the focus on such stand-alone storytelling will broaden the audience and bring in new viewers.2

Whatever. If it's a good show, I'll watch. Eventually, if the show makes it from two-hour pilot to series, there'll have to be story arcs that carry though the episodes. Otherwise we'll all get bored by the lack of depth and the show will likely go bye-bye.
