Buy Merlin Season 1 DVDs – They’re on Sale!

I was taking a look at my preorders on Amazon today and noticed that my Merlin: Season 2 DVD order is supposed to be delivered around January 18th. That was a nice little surprise, because we love Merlin.

While I was there, the Merlin season 1 DVD set caught my eye (I already own this one) because it’s on sale for $19.99 and the list price for this set is $49.98. That’s a hefty discount! I can’t say how long this discount will last but for the moment, if you’ve been toying with the idea of purchasing the Merlin DVDs, this might be the perfect time to buy.

In the Merlin Season 1 DVD Box

The box cover and discs are lovely, with a panoramic cast photo spanning the entire back of the unfolded disc holder and character pictures on each of the 5 discs that are part of the season one set.

However, whoever put the set together made one serious mistake. The discs include a disc number and episode numbers, but nowhere on the disks or the box are the episode titles! I don’t know about you, but when I watch episodes, I remember them by title, not number. So, I’ll have to come back to my lists regularly to find a particular episode number I want to watch.

  • Disc One: Episodes 1-3
  • Disc Two: Episodes 4-6
  • Disc Three: Episodes 7-9
  • Disc Four: Episodes 10-13
  • Disc Five: Special Features

DVD Extras – Special Features on the Merlin Season 1 DVDs

Merlin Season One includes some really wonderful and family-friendly episodes and includes these lovely DVD extras.

  • Audio commentary
  • Making-of featurettes: “Behind the Magic”
  • Video diaries
  • Photo gallery
  • Wallpaper

Episodes on the Merlin Season 1 DVDs

  1. The Dragon’s Call
  2. Valiant
  3. The Mark of Nimueh
  4. The Poisoned Chalice
  5. Lancelot
  6. A Remedy to Cure All Ills
  7. The Gates of Avalon
  8. The Beginning of the End
  9. Excalibur
  10. The Moment of Truth
  11. The Labyrinth of Gedref
  12. To Kill the King
  13. Le Morte D’Arthur

Any time I find a series I really enjoy, I try to pick up the DVDs to add to my collection. Merlin is fun and the DVDs are well worth their spot on my shelves.

And in case you have no idea what I’m talking about here, here’s some information about Merlin.

The mythical city of Camelot, in a time before history began. A fantastical realm of legendary beasts and mysterious peoples. A dangerous world in which magic has been banned by the ruthless tyrant, Uther Pendragon. When Merlin, a young man gifted with extraordinary magical powers, arrives in the kingdom, he quickly makes enemies, including the heir to Uther’s crown, the headstrong Prince Arthur. But guided by Uther’s wise physician, Gaius, Merlin is soon using his talents not just to survive but also to unlock Camelot’s mystical secrets. As he does so he discovers that his destiny and that of Arthur, the kingdom’s young leader-in-waiting, are inextricably linked.

Merlin season three premieres on Syfy on January 7, 2011 at 10/9 central.

Heads up about changes coming to SciFi Fantasies in 2011

This is just a little note to mention that changes are coming to this site and blog. I’ve been neglecting SciFi Fantasies for a while now and I feel compelled to find a way to bring back the love I once had for the site. I’ve been giving that some thought as the end of the year has approached and I’ve had a few ideas that I think might work out.

1. I have a heavy interest in some shows and could care less about others. I’d like SciFi Fantasies to reflect my interests more.

2. I created a database back when I started this site, but I’ve found that I don’t enjoy keeping it updated. If I’m not going to keep it relevant, there’s really no point in having it here. I’m not planning on losing all of the content, but I won’t be keeping some of the minutia such as the individual pages for episode details–unless I change my mind between now and implementation.

3. I would like to chat more on the blog. News is all well and good, but I truly enjoy episode and show discussion and I would like to do more of that. To that end, this site is not going to be spoilerphobe friendly. I have a love for spoilers and the site is probably going to reflect that.

4. I run several other sites I created for shows I’m especially fond of (stargateatlantisfan.com, eurekafan.com, stargateuniversefan.com). I would like to integrate them more fully with this site. Not sure how that will work, but I’m going to give it some additional thought.

5. I love books! I want to talk about science fiction and fantasy books more often here. Especially tie-ins for television I love.

6. I want to showcase fun stuff that fans love. I get a little caught up in the worlds created by the tv shows I love and find myself sometimes wanting to read more about them outside the sanctioned channels. I would like to talk about and link to fanfiction I find particularly fun and entertaining, or at the very least to the archives where it can be found. I’ve found that good fanfiction can be integral to keeping me excited about a show when a few bad episodes try to spoil my fun.

7. There is no 7 yet. :)

So there you go, a short summary of things I’d like to do with the site in 2011 and that I hope to get started on ASAP.

No Ordinary Family Coming this Fall to ABC

no-ordinary-family On Tuesdays this fall, I’ll be ready at 7 PM Central for the new show from ABC, No Ordinary Family. From the trailer I just watched to the summary of the show on the ABC website, I am intrigued and excited by the premise. The actors look like a great bunch also. This is a show I’ll definitely have to try out this fall. Will you be watching?

No Ordinary Family trailer:

No Ordinary Family summary:

The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary.

After 16 years of marriage, Jim and Stephanie’s relationship lacks the spark it once had, and their family life now consists of balancing work and their two children, leaving little time for family bonding.

During a family vacation set up by Jim in an attempt to reconnect, their plane crashes into the Amazon River. But this is where the fun starts for the Powells, as they soon discover that something’s not quite right. Each of them now possesses unique and distinct superpowers.

But saving and savoring their family life will be equally important, as they try to find purpose for their new powers and embark on a journey to find out what defines and unifies them.

The Powells are a totally relatable family who happen to be a little bit amazing.

No Ordinary Family stars:

  • Michael Chiklis as Jim Powell
  • Julie Benz as Stephanie Powell
  • Jimmy Bennett as JJ Powell
  • Kay Panabaker as Daphne Powell
  • Romany Malco as George St. Cloud
  • Autumn Reeser as Katie Andrews
  • Christina Chang as Det. Yvonne Cho
  • Tate Donovan as Mitch McCutcheon

No Ordinary Family writers and producers:

The pilot was written and executive-produced by Jon Feldman. The series is executive-produced by Feldman, Greg Berlanti, Morgan Wandell and David Semel, who also directed the pilot. Joe Hartwick, Jr. serves as producer. No Ordinary Family is from ABC Studios.

SGU and the future of Stargate

This isn’t going to be a long drawn out post about what I don’t like about the new Stargate series, Stargate Universe. There’s more than I had hoped, but I love the concept of the show and I have high hopes that it will continue to improve with every episode.

I admit I wasn’t thrilled by the first few SGU episodes after Air. Air was a good introduction to the characters and series, but the thing that’s getting me about this series is the slowness of it all. I don’t mind waiting for a payoff, but I’ve never been a fan of dramatic series like Lost, Heroes, ER, Grey’s Anatomy, later seasons of Smallville, or any of a number of other TV series. I like the relationship aspects, but I want to see a lot more action and adventure in this show. Why can’t a more character/relationship driven series still have plenty of action?

I like action, humor, and even Battlestar Galactica. ;) However, with the later, I found I could only handle so much drama before I was ready for it to be over with.

The good thing about Stargate Universe is that with “Time“, I saw what could be. That glimpse into the future of SGU has given me great hopes for the show. With “Time,” I know there’s action and adventure to be had and some of the stuff I’ve always loved about Stargate seems to be surfacing at last—the travel, the excitement, the danger…

I saw something special in “Time” and for the first time, I saw myself as a true fan of the show.

Chuck, as Delicious as Ever

Chuck premiered this week, and I DVR’d the program because it’s something I like to watch with my husband. We would fight if I watched early, and I’m lucky that I can get away with watching Stargate Atlantis and Eureka without him.

The premier of Chuck was an event I’ve been waiting for this month with baited breath. Would the show be as fresh as I remembered? Would Chuck, Sarah and Casey have the same great chemistry? Would Captain Awesome still be around?

Yes, yes and yes. And boy was I happy about all those yeses.

I was somewhat worried that the episode would be overrun with reintroduction stuff. From an article I posted a while back, Chuck Squared: Season 2 of Chuck Promises Twice the Fun, I had discovered that the writers were treating this second season premier episode as a chance to start over with the show. Not start over as in recreate the show, but starting anew with a chance to draw in new viewers. I have no way to determine if their tactic worked, but as a returning viewer, I was perfectly happy with the episode.

Casey’s particular dilemma picked up a thread from the previous season and ran with it. I loved the twist, and I love Casey. He’s a great character and Chuck, the show, wouldn’t be nearly as good without him.

In this episode, Chuck Versus the First Date, Chuck has the opportunity to see what his life might be like if he were no longer the intersect, and then of course, it’s all snatched away.

With a nice set up for episodes to come, I believe Chuck Versus the First Date has brought a favorite TV series back to the screen.

The Shrine is the Atlantis episode I’ve been waiting for

I love Stargate Atlantis, probably to the exclusion of all other tv shows currently playing first run episodes at the moment. That’s not to say I don’t love others, because I dearly love Eureka and Chuck, Monk, Psych, and Paranormal State. All these shows tickle my fancy in some way or other.

Atlantis, on the other hand, revs my engine. :-)

Doctor Who 2009 Specials?

It would seem there are a lot of rumors and “news” reports that Doctor Who, while it won’t have a full season in 2009, will return with four television specials. It’s reported that these are one hour specials, one of which will be shown around Easter 2009, and another one Christmas Day. Russell T. Davies was supposed to have written two of the 2009 specials, along with having co-written the others. Other writers include Gareth Roberts and Phil Ford.

Maybe, just maybe they’ll give us little teasers for whether or not the series will return in 2010…

Stargate Atlantis premieres tonight

Technically, Stargate Atlantis already premiered, but my DVR is still chugging away as it records the program for me. I am headed to the tv to watch the season 5 premiere episode Search and Rescue (really looking forward to it) as soon as I finish up a few things I wanted to do tonight.

One of those things was adding the Stargate: Continuum info to the site. I’ve done that and you can catch it under the science fiction & fantasy shows.

Of course, I’ll have to share my thoughts on SGA later, but that’ll have to be tomorrow! I feel as giddy as a schoolgirl. I’m certainly ready to watch some tv tonight! It’s been a long day.

Stargate SG-1 without General Hammond

Don S. Davis has died, and with his passing, I feel like an essential part of Stargate SG-1 has gone missing. What is Stargate SG-1 without General Hammond? General Hammond, Stargate SG-1To be frank, when changes came to Stargate SG-1 in season seven, I missed Hammond more than I missed Jack at first. Maybe because his leaving was so abrupt, but Jack’s dragged out. By the time Jack became the General, it was a have-to case of him either moving on or ruining the show with his continued absences.

That’s not to say I didn’t miss Jack (Richard Dean Anderson) when he left, because I certainly did. But Hammond had always seemed like such an integral part of the series. I came to like Landry quite well after a while, but he was no Hammond.

I’ve posted news about Don Davis’s death for those who might want to know the details of Davis’s passing.

Which one is better…Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman or Catherine Tate?

Hmm…this one is a hard decision for me. Well, partly. Billie and Freema are my two favorite Doctor Who companions since the relaunch of the series in 2005. Frankly, poor Catherine’s character is such a smarty pants most times that it makes it hard to watch.

Anyway, I’d love to know who your favorite Doctor Who companion is. All three will be appearing throughout the season, but mostly you’ll get to see “The Runaway Bride” Donna Noble who will be played by Catherine Tate. But Freema Agyeman, who was the Doctor’s companion Martha Jones in series three, does return during season four for “The Sontaran Strategem”, “The Poison Sky”, “The Doctor’s Daughter”, and two episodes in the finale. And, Billie Piper, who was Rose Tyler through two doctors and starred in the first episode of the new series and on through series two and will be in the three final episodes of season four. You’ll have a chance to catch a bit of their personalities, and should be able to figure out who you like the best.

Until next time…
