A List of the Stargate Atlantis Legacy Series Books; Because It’s Finally Over

It’s done. The end. The Legacy series is over.* And I’m a few months late with this post. Oops. Here’s all the books in the series, for those who might be interested.

One reviewer wasn’t that pleased with the way the series turned out. I wouldn’t know. I gave up reading after Homecoming because I don’t like reading series in progress. The series came back to mind recently though, after I received a notice from Fandemonium that some out of print books in the Stargate Atlantis series were now available—books I meant to pick up but just hadn’t gotten around to it. Anyway, back to the unhappy reviewer.

…while it’s not the unedited dreck which I usually give one star, it was a colossal disappointment. Especially considering the strong start in Homecoming. Since I’ve already detailed much of how, in my opinion, the series went off the rails in my reviews for The Furies and Secrets, I’ll try not to reiterate too much. It’s somewhat difficult, however, because many of the faults in this final volume originated elsewhere.

It made me want to go back and dig up the other reviews mentioned, but then I came to my senses. If I pick the rest of these books up now, I don’t want to be aware of any glaring issues before I read them. I’d rather not ask for trouble if I can help it.

*Apparently, it’s not really over after all. But I’ll save that for another post.

SGA-18: Allegiance by Melissa Scott & Amy Griswold

Allegiance is the 18th book in the series of Stargate Atlantis books and it was published November 2011.

Allegiance is book #3 in the Legacy Series. For those of you who don’t know, the Legacy Series started where the TV show left off at the end of season 5 of Stargate Atlantis. From there, the stories in the series, Homecoming and The Lost, have been able to take the SGA characters into uncharted territory because there’s no timeline the stories have to fit into.

The series is tied together tightly, so if you haven’t read the first two Legacy books, you’re definitely going to want to read them before you read Allegiance.

If you want the hard copy version, you’ll either have to buy directly from stargatenovels.com or wait until it’s available elsewhere. I seriously suggest you buy the ebook because the price is really good. If you love the book, you can always get a paperback copy as soon as it’s available.

Alphas premiered on Syfy Monday night. I recorded it to my DVR and started watching the pilot episode that night. About an hour into the one and a half hour  (including commercial time) episode I stopped watching and went to bed. The show was interesting but not enough to keep me from getting sleepy.

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel any particular anxiousness to finish the episode, but today I watched the rest.

Alphas tells the story of several people who have special abilities. The people aren’t that interesting, and the acting wasn’t that great. The action was okay, as was the dialogue, but there really wasn’t anything special about the show.

I will watch at least one more episode of Alphas, but I don’t hold out a lot of hope that the show is going to hold my interest. On the surface, so far, I don’t see how it’s really that different from Heroes (at least the beginning of the series – I never watched past season 1).

There are several great science fiction television shows airing these days, including Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Falling Skies, to name three. Alphas isn’t going to be one of them, unless something magical happens in the second episode.

Poll for Stargate Fans Has Little Chance of Success

Not for the reasons you might think, either. 

I’m all for a vote to help save the Stargate franchise, but in this instance, I found myself turned off the vote by the wording of the request for votes.

They are canceling Stargate! Not only SGU, but the whole Stargate franchise!

But we are already seeing SGU getting better every episode. We want to see more episodes and movies out of the franchise! Also, it’s not only SGU’s own fault for its cancellation. SyFy’s poor slot arrangement of the show largely contributes to its poor performance.

I know why SGU was cancelled. It wasn’t very good in the beginning. In fact, it was part way into season 2 before the show became exciting and interesting enough to bring me back into the fold of SGU fans.

As for this poll, I don’t think it’s smart to put so much emphasis on Syfy as being part of the reason for the show’s failure. Syfy has been a huge supporter of Stargate over the years.

I think SGU had already lost far too many viewers before a time slot move was even contemplated. Denial of the facts isn’t helping anyone. Some people love the show. Many more do not.

Me, I have found a new appreciation for the episodes of Stargate Universe as the series nears its end. But blaming Syfy for the failure of the previous episodes is not a smart move. I won’t vote in this poll, even though I do think Stargate deserves to be saved.

Syfy Pilot Alphas to be Directed by Jack Bender, Lost‘s Director/Executive Producer

SYFY PILOT ALPHAS TO BE DIRECTED BY LOST DIRECTOR/EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JACK BENDER

First Project For Acclaimed Director After Wrapping LOST Series Finale

New York, New York – May 24, 2010 – Syfy has inked award winning director/executive producer Jack Bender as director/executive producer for the action-adventure 90-minute pilot, Alphas (working title) from writers Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk) and Michael Karnow, it was announced today by Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of Original Programming, Syfy and Co-Head of Content for Universal Cable Productions, which is the studio for the project.  Bender just wrapped six seasons as an executive producer and director on the critically acclaimed series LOST, and directed Sunday’s much anticipated series finale. Alphas is executive produced by Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun for BermanBraun Television and is slated to commence production in Toronto this summer.

Alphas follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills.  Using physical feats and uniquely advanced mental abilities, this unlikely team takes the law into their own hands and uncovers what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able or willing to solve.  These gifted individuals must balance their quirky personalities and disparate backgrounds with their not always visible powers as they work to solve crimes, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy.

Bender is a film director, actor, television producer and screenwriter who was most recently a producer and lead director on the hit Emmy Award-winning series LOST. He has also directed popular shows such as The Sopranos, Carnivale, Alias and Boston Public. He is also an accomplished painter, sculptor and mixed media artist.  Bender is represented by the United Talent Agency and Bob Myman at Myman, Abell, Fineman, Greenspan and Light.
